Nyūtō Onsen is a group of traditional ryokan located in a mountainous area near Lake Tazawa. Each inn has its own hot spring source, with different types of water including sulfur-rich, milky, and clear baths.
The area is especially known for its outdoor baths surrounded by forest, particularly during winter when the baths are covered in snow. The atmosphere is quiet and remote, with very little modern development.
Visitors can enjoy “onsen hopping” using a pass that provides access to multiple baths across different ryokan. Access is mainly by bus or car, and some establishments are fairly isolated.
