Historic hot spring town tucked away in the mountains of the Izu Peninsula, considered one of Japan’s oldest onsen. Founded in the 9th century by the monk Kūkai, Shuzenji Onsen is known for its traditional atmosphere, stone-paved alleys, wooden ryokan, Zen temples, and riverside baths like the famous Kawara-yu. Visitors can enjoy public baths, private springs in ryokan, a free foot bath, a peaceful bamboo grove, and slow scenic strolls.

Price: Free access to the village. Baths range from about 500 to 2,000 ¥ depending on the facility
Touristy? : Moderately touristy. Popular among Japanese and a few foreign travelers seeking an authentic experience
