Minami-za is Kyoto’s most iconic kabuki theatre, located at the eastern end of Shijō-dōri, just before the Gion Bridge. Originally founded in the early 17th century, it’s one of Japan’s oldest theatres. The current building, rebuilt in traditional style in 1929, is designated as a Tangible Cultural Property.
It’s a major venue for kabuki performances, but also hosts other traditional Japanese arts like dance, music, and seasonal shows. Each December, it features the famous Kichirei Kaomise Kabuki, starring some of the most celebrated kabuki actors.
