Ōtoyo-jinja is a small, hidden Shinto shrine located along the Philosopher’s Path, away from the crowds. Dating back to the Heian period (9th century), it is dedicated to longevity and healing. What makes it truly unique are its stone rat statues—the only ones of their kind in Kyoto—standing guard at the shrine. They reference the god Ōkuninushi and the legend of a rat that once saved his life.
Entrance fee: Free.
Touristy? Very quiet, even during peak seasons. A perfect peaceful stop along the walk.
