Historic Shinto shrine located in the center of Chichibu, founded over 2,000 years ago. It is one of the most important shrines in the region, known for its intricately detailed wooden carvings, some believed to be by the same artisan behind those at Nikkō Tōshōgū. The shrine plays a central role in the Chichibu Night Festival (early December), one of Japan’s most famous winter matsuri. The atmosphere is peaceful, and the site is pleasant to visit year-round.

Price: Free
Touristy? : Moderately touristy. Very crowded during the festival, quiet the rest of the year.
