Major Shinto shrine located in the heart of Kamakura, founded in the 11th century by shogun Minamoto no Yoritomo, the founder of the Kamakura shogunate. Dedicated to Hachiman, the god of war and protector of samurai, it stands on a hillside, accessed by a grand staircase and a wide approach lined with torii gates and lotus ponds. The site is also famous for its cherry blossoms in spring, lotus flowers in summer, and traditional events like horseback archery (yabusame).
