A pavilion of the Tōdai-ji temple complex, located on a hillside east of the Great Buddha Hall (Daibutsuden) in Nara. Originally built in the 8th century and rebuilt in 1669 after a fire, it is known for its wooden terrace with sweeping panoramic views over the city. Every March, it hosts the Shunie (Omizutori) ceremony—one of Japan’s oldest Buddhist rituals—featuring giant purifying torches carried along the balcony.

Entrance fee: Free
Touristy? Moderately touristy. Very popular during Omizutori, but generally quiet and peaceful the rest of the year—especially in the late afternoon.
