Located in the mountains of Nagano Prefecture near the Snow Monkey Park, Jigokudani Valley is a dramatic volcanic landscape known for its steaming vents, sulfurous streams, and rugged terrain. The name “Hell Valley” comes from the eerie plumes of steam that rise from the ground, creating an otherworldly atmosphere.
While many visitors come for the monkeys, the valley itself is a beautiful destination for nature lovers, especially in autumn (for foliage) or winter (for the snowy contrast with steam).
Entrance fee: Free
Touristy?: Moderately touristy, often combined with a visit to the Snow Monkey Park, but still peaceful and scenic.
🗺️ Good to know:
Wear comfortable shoes, the terrain can be uneven and muddy.
Great photo spot in all seasons, with fewer people than the monkey area.
Not to be confused with Jigokudani in Noboribetsu (Hokkaido), which shares the same name but is a different site.
