The Japan Ukiyo-e Museum in Matsumoto houses the largest private collection of ukiyo-e in the world. The Sakai family has collected more than 100,000 works over several generations, including woodblock prints, paintings, folding screens, and rare books. The museum presents rotating exhibitions from this large archive, focusing on famous artists and different themes of Edo-period printmaking. English explanations are limited, but there are pamphlets available and the staff are helpful. The museum is located slightly outside the city center, near the Court and Historical Village area.
