Buddhist temple founded in the 8th century, located on the slopes of Mount Takao, west of Tokyo. Dedicated to Yakushi Nyorai, the deity of healing, and to the tengu, protective mountain spirits, it is an important pilgrimage site. The temple features multiple halls, gates, and statues spread along the trail leading to the summit. The atmosphere is spiritual and forested—perfect for a meditative break during a hike.

Touristy? : Frequently visited, especially on weekends and during autumn. Very popular among hikers and Japanese visitors.
