Located on Mount Hiei in Kyoto, this hall is the heart of the Enryaku-ji complex, a major center of Tendai Buddhism founded in the 8th century. The Konpon Chudo houses a sacred flame that has been burning continuously for over 1,200 years. Although the main building is under renovation until 2026, it remains open to the public, enclosed in a temporary structure.

Entrance fee: ¥1,000 (includes access to the main Tōdō area of the complex).
Touristy? Not very touristy compared to other temples in Kyoto, but sees more visitors during autumn for its maple trees and school trips.
