Also known as the Golden Pavilion, Kinkaku-ji is one of Japan’s most famous and iconic temples. Its main hall, covered in gold leaf, reflects beautifully in a carefully landscaped pond, surrounded by a classic Muromachi-era garden. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it’s a must-see in Kyoto — especially in spring, autumn, or just after a snowfall.

Entrance fee: ¥500 (cash only).
Touristy?: Very touristy, especially between 9 AM and 1 PM.
Tip: Arrive at opening time (9 AM) or late afternoon to avoid crowds and catch better lighting for photos.
