The Naruto Strait separates Shikoku Island from Awaji Island and is famous for its giant whirlpools (Naruto no Uzushio) that form when tidal currents rush through the narrow channel. These spectacular whirlpools can reach up to 20 meters in diameter, depending on the season and tide.

You can view them from the Ōnaruto Bridge (which has a glass observation walkway) or take a boat cruise to see them up close.

💴 Admission:
– Free from the bridge walkway
– ~¥1,800–¥2,400 by boat (depending on the cruise option)

👥 Touristy? Yes — but mostly visited by Japanese travelers
📍 Access: About 1 hour by bus from Tokushima or Kobe

💡 Tip: Check the tide schedule before you go — the whirlpools are visible about four times a day when the current is strongest.
🚤 Option: Take a boat tour for an up-close view (~1 hour, ~¥2,500)
