Higashiyama Jishō-ji, also known as the Silver Pavilion (Ginkaku-ji), is a Zen temple located in northeastern Kyoto. Built in the late 15th century by shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa as a retreat, the temple was never actually covered in silver—unlike the famous Golden Pavilion (Kinkaku-ji). Still, its refined and understated design beautifully reflects the concept of wabi-sabi—the beauty of simplicity and imperfection.

Entrance fee: ¥500
Touristy? Yes, but generally quieter than Kinkaku-ji. Best visited in the morning or late afternoon.
Tip: Ginkaku-ji is located at the start (or end) of the Philosopher’s Path (Tetsugaku no Michi)—perfect for a peaceful stroll.
