Lion Rock in Sirigiya is one of the most unique UNESCO world heritage sites I have ever seen. The rock formation itself is very large and foreign for the surrounding area. But what is really special is what is on top of the rock...an entire palace!!
The rock fortress has a rich ancient history dating back to the 5th century. Built by King Kashyapa, it features impressive ruins of an upper palace, frescoes, a mirror wall, and bathing pools. The grounds around the rock are also famous for its elaborate and advanced urban planning and irrigation system.
The hike up the rock is a lot of stairs but so so so worth it!! I went during sunset and it was stunning. Panoramic views from the top and so much to explore once up there.
Once you buy a ticket, you can also go to a free museum in the ticket office that explains more about the urban planning and advanced technology used for the 5th century. The ticket is $30 and worth every penny.
