Tikal is an ancient Mayan city dating back to 4th Century BC. It was a powerful kingdom that dominated the region politically and economically. With impressive monumental architecture and a long dynastic ruler list, Tikal is one of the best-understood Mayan cities.

I highly recommend getting a guide here so you actually know what you are looking at. I did not have a guide and it made the experience a lot less impactful. Tikal is absolutely mesmerising and has so many legends surrounding it, so it would be a shame to miss out on that history.

Tikal is a few hours drive away from the nearest tourist hub of Flores. Many tours include transportation with hotel pickup and drop-off.
