THE Machu Picchu. One of the seven wonders of the world and rightfully so!! I'm pleased to say that this world wonder is not overrated at all. It is correctly hyped as its absolutely stunning, mind boggling, and mystic. It's perched at 2,430 meters above sea level in a stunning tropical mountain forest. It is the ultimate ancient Inca masterpiece.
There are a few ways to explore Machu Picchu...it really depends what you want out of the experience.
Take the train from Cusco (can be done in a day or with an overnight in Aguas Calientes town)
Hike Salkantay Trek (3, 4, or 5 nights)
Hike Inca Trail (2 or 4 nights)
Take the shuttle bus from Cusco (budget option)
I personally did Salkantay Trek and absolutely loved it. Some sections are quite tough and it's deff a lot of hiking but its sooo rewarding to arrive at Machu Picchu and feel like you really earned it. It also helps to synthesize just how remote the Incas made this citadel.
The entrance to Machu Picchu itself it based on a ticket system that needs to be purchased in advance. They sell out pretty early so if that happens you can wait outside the ticket office in Aguas Calientes and they give them out on a first come first severs basis.
