Gunma, Japan

Located just north of Tokyo, Gunma is known for its hot springs, mountain scenery, outdoor adventures, and distinct four seasons. The best time to visit depends on whether you're seeking hiking, snow sports, or a relaxing onsen getaway.

🌸 Spring (March–May): Mild temperatures and blooming cherry blossoms make spring an excellent time to explore. Mountain areas warm up later than Tokyo, so late April and May are especially beautiful around Minakami and Ikaho Onsen.

☀️ Summer (June–August): Gunma's mountain regions offer a cooler escape from Tokyo's heat. Enjoy rafting, hiking, and nature activities in Minakami, though June and early July bring the rainy season. Higher elevations remain comfortable even during August.

🍁 Autumn (September–November): Many travelers consider autumn the best season to visit. Crisp weather and vibrant foliage transform the mountains, making it ideal for scenic drives, hiking, and onsen stays.

❄️ Winter (December–February): Winter is perfect for hot spring lovers and snow enthusiasts. Soak in the famous outdoor baths of Kusatsu Onsen or enjoy skiing and snowboarding near Minakami. Snow-covered landscapes create a magical atmosphere, especially at riverside ryokan like Takaragawa Onsen Osenkaku.

Travel Tip: For outdoor activities and comfortable weather, visit during May or October through early November. For iconic snow-covered hot spring experiences, plan your trip between late December and February.

Keep in mind that mountain weather can change quickly, and some roads or hiking trails may close during heavy snowfall. If you're visiting popular onsen towns during weekends or holidays, book accommodations well in advance.
