Carry Cash Just in Case
Some rural businesses may not accept cards
Quaddell Reis
West Tokyo Area, Japan
While credit cards, Suica, and PASMO are widely accepted throughout Japan, some smaller businesses in Western Tokyo and Yamanashi may still prefer cash. This is especially true for rural restaurants, local shops, roadside vendors, and certain transportation services.
I recommend carrying a small amount of cash when exploring the region, particularly if you plan to visit mountain villages, hot springs, hiking areas, or smaller attractions. Having cash on hand can help you avoid unexpected inconveniences and support local businesses that may not accept electronic payments.
If you see a 7-11, Daily Yamazaki, Family Mart or a Lawson, you can withdraw cash from these stores.
