While central Beppu is walkable, many of the city's top attractions are located in different neighborhoods. Local buses are the easiest way to reach places like the Hells of Beppu, Kannawa Onsen, Myoban Onsen, and the Beppu Beach Sand Bath.
Approximate travel times from Beppu Station:
♨️ Hells of Beppu (Umi Jigoku area): 20–25 minutes
♨️ Kannawa Onsen: 20–25 minutes
🏖️ Beppu Beach Sand Bath: 15–20 minutes
♨️ Myoban Onsen: 30–40 minutes
🚞 Yufuin: 45–60 minutes by bus (or about 1 hour by train)
Things to know:
Most buses depart from the east side of Beppu Station.
Use Google Maps or the My Route app for real-time schedules.
IC cards like Suica, PASMO, and ICOCA are accepted on most buses.
If you plan to visit multiple hot spring areas in one day, consider the Kamenoi Bus Free Pass.
My tip: Stay near Beppu Station if you're relying on public transportation. It makes exploring the city much easier.
