Getting Around Nagasaki: Trams, Buses & Walking
Nagasaki's streetcars make exploring the city easy and affordable.

Nagasaki is one of the easiest cities in Kyushu to explore without a car. Most major attractions are connected by the city's historic tram network, with buses filling in the gaps for destinations outside the city center.
Best way to get around:
đ Streetcar (Tram): Ideal for most sightseeing.
đ Bus: Useful for destinations like Mount Inasa and areas beyond the tram network.
đś Walking: Expect hills and stairsâcomfortable shoes are a must!
Approximate travel times from Nagasaki Station:
đŽ Shinchi Chinatown: 7â10 minutes by tram
đ Meganebashi (Spectacles Bridge): 10 minutes by tram + short walk
đż Glover Garden & Oura Church: 15 minutes by tram + 5-minute walk uphill
âŽď¸ Peace Park & Atomic Bomb Museum: 15â20 minutes by tram
đ Mount Inasa Ropeway: 15 minutes by bus or free shuttle + ropeway ride
âď¸ Nagasaki Airport: 40â45 minutes by airport limousine bus
Things to know:
Most tram rides have a flat fare, making them simple to use.
IC cards like Suica, PASMO, and ICOCA are accepted.
Consider purchasing a 1-Day Tram Pass if you plan to visit multiple attractions.
Use Google Maps for route planningâit works exceptionally well in Nagasaki.
My tip: Stay near Nagasaki Station or Shinchi Chinatown for easy access to the tram network and restaurants. Renting a car isn't necessary if you're only visiting central Nagasaki. The city's narrow streets, hills, and limited parking make public transportation the better choice. Unlike many Japanese cities, Nagasaki Airport does not have a train connection. Most visitors take the airport limousine bus to and from the city.
