High Tide or Low Tide? Experiencing Miyajima's Torii Gate

The tide can completely change your visit—here's what to expect.

The famous floating torii gate at Itsukushima Shrine looks completely different depending on the tide.

At high tide, the torii appears to float gracefully on the water, creating one of Japan's most iconic views. This is the perfect time for photography and experiencing the shrine as it has been admired for centuries.

At low tide, the water recedes, allowing you to walk across the exposed seabed and get surprisingly close to the torii gate. You'll be able to appreciate its impressive size and see details that aren't visible from a distance.

I recommend checking the day's tide schedule before your visit. If your schedule is flexible, consider spending enough time on Miyajima to experience both high and low tide—it feels like visiting two completely different places in a single day.
