Hokuriku Shinkansen

The Hokuriku Shinkansen is the fastest and most convenient way to travel between Tokyo and Nagano. Trains depart frequently from Tokyo Station and Ueno Station, reaching Nagano Station in approximately 1 hour and 20–30 minutes depending on the service.

The Kagayaki is the fastest train but requires a reserved seat, while the Hakutaka makes additional stops and offers both reserved and non-reserved seating. If you're using a Japan Rail Pass or regional rail pass, be sure to check which train services are covered before traveling.

Travel Tip: If you're visiting Nagano's ski resorts, hot springs, or mountain towns, the Hokuriku Shinkansen provides an easy connection to local trains and buses from Nagano Station. During weekends, holidays, and winter ski season, reserving your seat in advance is highly recommended.

I've taken the Hokuriku Shinkansen as far as Takasaki, and one of the things I appreciate most is how comfortable and efficient the ride is. For travelers heading to Nagano, it's the fastest and easiest rail connection from Tokyo.
