Rent a Car
The best way to explore Miyakojima
Quaddell Reis
Miyakojima, Japan
Miyakojima is best explored by rental car. While there are taxis and a limited bus network, many of the island's most beautiful beaches, scenic viewpoints, cafés, and attractions are spread out and difficult to reach without your own transportation.
If you're visiting during peak travel periods such as Golden Week, summer vacation (July–August), or holidays, reserve your rental car as early as possible. Availability can become limited, especially for automatic vehicles.
Having a car also allows you to:
Visit beaches at sunrise or sunset.
Explore Irabu, Shimoji, and Kurima Islands at your own pace.
Stop at scenic viewpoints and local cafés along the way.
Easily carry snorkeling gear, beach equipment, or luggage.
Pro Tip: If you're arriving at Miyako Airport or Shimojishima Airport, many rental companies offer complimentary shuttle service between the airport and their rental office.
⛽ Fill Up Before Returning Your Car
Gas stations are less common than on mainland Japan, and many rental companies require you to return the vehicle with a full tank. Plan a stop at a nearby gas station before heading back to the airport or rental office.
That kind of local, practical advice is exactly what travelers appreciate in a destination guide. It helps your guide stand out because it's based on the experience of actually getting around the island, not just listing attractions.
