Kyushu, Japan

The Yufuin no Mori is one of Kyushu's most popular sightseeing trains, offering a memorable journey from Hakata Station in Fukuoka to the hot spring towns of Yufuin and Beppu. With its signature emerald-green exterior, warm wood interiors, and panoramic windows, the ride is an experience in itself.

The journey from Hakata to Yufuin takes approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes, winding through Kyushu's countryside, river valleys, and mountain landscapes. Some services continue onward to Beppu.

Things to know before you ride:

All seats are reserved only—there are no non-reserved cars.

  • Reservations open one month before departure, and trains often sell out during weekends, holidays, and peak travel seasons.

  • The train is covered by the JR Kyushu Rail Pass and Japan Rail Pass, but seat reservations are still required.

  • Only select services continue all the way to Beppu—check the timetable carefully when booking.

  • Onboard, you'll find a small lounge area and a counter selling snacks, drinks, souvenirs, and the exclusive Yufuin no Mori bento.

My tip: Sit near the front or rear observation windows for the best views, and arrive at Hakata Station early to take photos before boarding. If you have the JR Rail Pass, you can use it on this line as well!
