Taking the Sonic Train: Fukuoka to Beppu
The fastest and easiest way to travel from Hakata to Beppu without renting a car.
Quaddell Reis
Kyushu, Japan
The Limited Express Sonic is the most convenient way to travel between Fukuoka (Hakata Station) and Beppu Station. The journey takes approximately 2 hours with no transfers, making it an excellent option for travelers exploring northern Kyushu.
The Sonic runs frequently throughout the day—typically every 30 minutes—and offers both reserved and non-reserved seating. Services are operated by JR Kyushu's distinctive 883 and 885 series trains, designed to handle Kyushu's winding coastal routes comfortably.
Things to know before you ride:
Depart from JR Hakata Station and arrive directly at JR Beppu Station.
Reserve your seat in advance during weekends, holidays, and peak travel seasons.
The route is fully covered by the JR Northern Kyushu Pass and the Japan Rail Pass.
Sit on the right side when traveling from Hakata to Beppu for some of the best coastal views.
Large luggage can be stored in overhead racks or designated storage areas.
My tip: If you're visiting both Yufuin and Beppu, take the Sonic to Beppu first, then rent a car or use local transportation to explore the surrounding area at your own pace.
Also, if you have the JR Rail Pass, you can use it on this line!
