To truly experience the beauty of Miyajima, you have to see it from above, and the Miyajima Ropeway is the way to do it. The journey itself is a two-part adventure, starting with a small gondola that glides you over the magnificent primeval forest before you switch to a larger cable car for the final ascent. Once you arrive at the top station, you're not quite at the summit; a beautiful, roughly 30-minute hike will take you to the peak of Mt. Misen, where you'll be rewarded with absolutely breathtaking panoramic views of the Seto Inland Sea. For an easier start, look for the free shuttle bus from Momijidani Park that takes you directly to the ropeway entrance.
