For a true taste of local tradition, you have to visit Uematsu, a beloved Japanese confectionery shop that's been delighting people since the Meiji era. They're famous for their "an-doughnuts," a crispy, fried delight filled with a smooth, sweet red bean paste that has locals and visitors lining up. It’s the perfect handmade treat to savor as you explore the charming streets of Uenohara.

This is another HIDDEN GEM. Try their "Anko Donuts" and "Saka Manju". The "Anko Donuts" are red bean donuts. Uenohara is famous for its "Saka Manju." "Saka Manju" is a traditional Japanese steamed bun. It is characterized by its fluffy, fermented dough made with rice koji (malted rice) or sake lees (sakekasu), which imparts a distinct, fragrant sake aroma to the confection. It is typically filled with smooth sweet red bean paste (koshian). Despite the fermented dough, the alcohol completely evaporates during the steaming process, leaving a soft, chewy texture perfect for all ages
