Overnight Train Guide
What to know about booking and riding on an overnight train in Vietnam (with kids).

We took an overnight train from Ninh Binh to Hue which was around an 11 hour journey. We booked a 4-berth sleeping cabin through 12Go Asia, which worked well for our family. At the time of our trip it cost us $189 AUD for 4 beds.
We departed from Ninh Binh Railway Station late at night. And found that the system was quite organised and our train arrived right on time.
If you arrive early to the train station, luggage storage is available at the station (behind the kiosk) for a small fee, which made it easier to grab a bite to eat for dinner without carrying bags.
While waiting for our train, a group of local school-aged kids approached our family to practise their English. They spent time chatting with our kids and drawing pictures together, which ended up being a really memorable and unexpected part of the experience.
While we didn't end up getting much sleep, it was definitely an experience we will remember!
Tips for the Overnight Train with kids:
We brought our own snacks and drinks onboard
There was a food cart available, but we didn’t purchase anything
A hot water station is available onboard (commonly used for instant noodles)
Have your transit to your hotel from your arrival station organised prior. You'll be thankful it's sorted if you end up with little sleep like us!
I actually have a mini video from our experience which I'll link here for you. Just keep in mind that we did this experience a few years ago so some things might have changed.
