Nez de Bœuf is the best roadside viewpoint along the Route du Volcan. It’s a quick stop, but the kind that catches people by surprise. Pull off into the marked parking area and walk a few steps to the railing — you’ll be looking down into the Rivière des Remparts, a deep, green canyon carved into the highlands by an ancient lava flow.
From here, you can also catch a clear line of sight across the Plaine des Cafres and into the high cirques on clear days. At sunrise, the light cuts across the gorge and makes the whole place feel dramatic and quiet. There's no hike required, just a good camera and maybe a jumper — it gets cold even in the dry season.
The viewpoint sits at over 2,000 metres altitude, and clouds often roll in by late morning. Stop early on your way up to Pas de Bellecombe or circle back after your hike if you miss it on the way up.
👉 Local tip: There’s no toilet, water, or shop here — it’s a pure photo stop. Watch your step near the edge if there’s fog.
