If there’s one place in La Réunion where nature overwhelms you instantly, it’s the lookout at Piton Maïdo. Perched high above the Cirque de Mafate, this clifftop viewpoint offers a sweeping, dizzying panorama into one of the island’s most remote calderas — with jagged peaks, hidden villages, and mist rising from deep jungle valleys below.

The drive up from Saint-Paul takes you through tamarind forest and open meadows, eventually arriving at a large parking area near the belvédère. From here, it’s a short walk to the edge — and a truly breathtaking sight that’s worth every curve in the road.

For serious adventurers, Piton Maïdo is also a trailhead into Cirque de Mafate. Up to Activity Level 5/5 for full descent into Mafate. 12+ for hikes (fitness & gear required). 2–8+ hours for hikes (depending on route).

Popular routes include:

• Maïdo to Roche Plate (steep descent and overnight possible),

• Maïdo to Trois Roches or La Nouvelle, for experienced trekkers,

• Or shorter walks along the rim to less-frequented viewpoints.

👉 Pro Tip: This is one of the best sunrise spots on the island — arrive by 5:30–6:00 am and bring layers. The temperature drops sharply before dawn.
