Sainte-Suzanne is one of Réunion’s oldest communes and still one of the best east coast stops if you want to see waterfalls, sugar cane fields, and Creole heritage without hiking for it. It’s a working town, not dressed up for visitors, but that’s part of its charm — especially if you’re into local history or heading north-south along the N2.

Things worth seeing:

  • Phare de Bel Air – the oldest lighthouse on the island, and one of the few you can walk up to (no entry, but the grounds are open)

  • Cascade Niagara – tall, photogenic, and easy to access by car or bike

  • Canal walk and picnic spots – flat, shaded, and ideal if you're travelling with kids

  • Local distilleries and sugarcane fields – the town still feels tied to the land

  • Street food and snacks in the centre – cheap, filling, and made for locals

It’s a good half-day stop between Saint-André and Saint-Denis, especially if you’re heading inland toward Salazie or looping back from the Route des Laves.

👉 Local tip: Cascade Niagara can go from trickle to full roar overnight. After rain, it’s one of the best photo spots on the island — but wear good shoes, the rocks stay slick.
