Pas des Sables

Directions

Pas des Sables is the first real stop where the volcano starts to feel close. After winding up from Bourg-Murat, the landscape flips suddenly from green forest to something stark and Martian. This viewpoint marks that line. One side is thick with tamarind and cryptomeria, the other drops into red rock and volcanic dust stretching to the horizon.

It’s not somewhere to linger long. The wind’s often sharp, and the clouds move quickly. However, it’s a spot that makes you pause. The road continues on to Pas de Bellecombe and Piton de la Fournaise, but this is where the anticipation kicks in. If you’re early, you might catch the whole plain lit up gold. If you’re late, you might see nothing but mist.

👉 Don’t just drive past. Get out and walk to the edge. Most visitors stay at the railing near the car, but the real view is just a short walk downhill on the right. Bring a jacket.
