This version of the Piton de la Fournaise hike starts before sunrise, so you’re up at Pas de Bellecombe with a headlamp, standing at the edge of the crater as the sky begins to lighten. It’s colder, quieter, and surreal — especially if there’s mist in the Enclos Fouqué basin.

You’ll descend the switchbacks into the lava field while it’s still dim, walking over black, jagged rock under a pale pink sky. By the time you're approaching Formica Leo and the Dolomieu rim, the sun’s up and lighting the whole caldera. The light at this hour is why you get up early for it — warm, low-angle, and perfect for photos.

Your guide will pace the group to get to the most dramatic viewing points at the right time, and share geological and local insights without rushing. If there's recent volcanic activity, they’ll adjust the route for safety, often with bonus side-paths toward new lava flows or cooled vents.

It’s not an easy walk — the terrain is uneven and winds can be strong — but if you're reasonably fit, it’s manageable and a clear highlight of any winter trip to Réunion.
