The trail to Roche Écrite is one of La Réunion’s most rewarding highland adventures — a full-day hike into the clouds, through tropical forest, high moorland, and up to one of the most panoramic summits on the island.

Starting from Plaine d’Affouches (above Saint-Denis), the trail winds gradually through bois de couleurs, misty fern groves, and patches of endemic forest. You’ll pass the Roche Écrite refuge about halfway in — an optional overnight stop if you want to do sunrise at the summit.

The final stretch to the top includes wooden steps, muddy ascents, and rocky ledges, leading to a windswept summit plateau at 2,276 meters. On a clear day, the views are staggering: Cirque de Salazie to the left, Cirque de Mafate to the right, and Piton des Neiges in the distance.

The name Roche Écrite (“Written Rock”) comes from inscriptions carved into the stone by early settlers, and the area is now a protected nature reserve, home to rare birds and native flora.
