Col des Bœufs is the main gateway into Cirque de Mafate — the island’s wildest and most remote cirque, only accessible by foot or helicopter. At over 1,950 metres, this grassy mountain pass is surrounded by tamarind forest, mist, and jaw-dropping views over Salazie and Mafate.

It’s also a key hiking hub, with well-marked trails leading to:

  • La Nouvelle (2–2.5 hours, easiest Mafate village hike)

  • Marla (3–4 hours), via plateau and descent

  • Caverne Dufour and Piton des Neiges (longer routes)

  • Plaine des Tamarins, a haunting, foggy forest en route

The parking area is gated and usually includes a small paid car park with a shuttle service from Le Bélier (especially needed in bad weather). There are no shops, toilets, or shelters at the pass itself — it’s just you, your backpack, and the path.

👉 Local tip: Bring warm layers. Even if it’s 28°C in Cilaos or Salazie, it’s often windy, cold, and misty up here, especially before 10 am. And start early — clouds roll in fast.
