Le Tampon is a working highland town stretched out across the southern slopes of La Réunion, known more for its local life than sightseeing — but it’s one of the best spots to stay if you’re heading to the volcano. At around 550–700 m altitude, it’s cooler than the coast, well-connected by road, and full of markets, bakeries, and gîtes that cater to hikers and slow travelers.

What to use it for:

  • Gateway to Bourg-Murat and Route du Volcan (25–30 min drive)

  • Access to forest walks, like Parc des Palmiers and Petit Tampon trails

  • Stocking up on food, gear, or cash before heading up to Pas de Bellecombe

  • Affordable gîtes and self-catering stays, like Gîte Au Randonneur

  • A few casual local restaurants serving proper Creole food (Le QG is a good pick)

While it’s not a destination in itself, Le Tampon is practical, well-placed, and local-feeling — the kind of place where you’re more likely to meet mountain bikers than tourists with selfie sticks.

👉 Local tip: Thursday is market day — head to Place du Marché early for produce, spices, and street snacks like bonbons piments.
