La Glacière is one of the few historical landmarks hidden along the rim of Cirque de Mafate — a cool, shaded spot once used to harvest ice from natural rock basins and send it down to Saint-Paul in pre-refrigeration days. It sits deep in the high forest just off the Grand Bord trail, with forest cover, stone ruins, and sweeping views over the remparts if the clouds lift.

To get there, you’ll need to:

  • Start early from Le Maïdo parking

  • Hike along the Mafate rim trail (Grand Bord)

  • Descend into the forest after the viewpoint section

Expect slippery rocks, dense foliage, and historical interpretation signs that explain how the site was used in the 19th century. The walk isn’t too technical, but it’s long and requires stamina, proper shoes, and water.

👉 Local tip: Join a guided hike from Le Maïdo if you want context — many French-speaking guides include this in their weekly group tours.
