In Manapany-les-Bains, south of Petite-Île, you’ll find more than just waves and palm trees — this is a layered cultural landscape, full of hidden corners worth exploring slowly.

Start at the Tourist Information Center, where locals sometimes offer impromptu basket-weaving workshops right in the garden. A local shares her time, her craft, her connection to tradition, and her jokes. If you’re lucky enough to catch one in session, you can ask to join in, even with no previous experience.

From there, take the short seaside path toward the Ancien Four à Chaux — the ruins of a historic lime kiln that once processed coral and limestone. Though small, it’s atmospheric and rich with stories. A quick pause here is a great chance to connect with the island’s Creole and colonial past.

Keep following the path and you'll reach the black-rock beach of Manapany, where crashing waves, salt breeze, and rock pools create the perfect setting for a mid-day break or a moment of calm reflection.

👉 Pro Tip: Bring a hat and water — the path is short but mostly unshaded. The tourism office may have updated info on workshop times.
👉 Hidden Gem: Ask at the info desk about other rotating local demos — sometimes there are small food tastings or craft pop-ups tied to local events.
