Saint-Leu is one of the best all-round bases on Réunion’s west coast — less crowded than Saint-Gilles but still packed with good food, lagoon access, and cool things to do. It’s got a local feel, and a surfy edge, and makes a great stop between beach time and inland exploring.
Here’s what you can do:
Swim or snorkel in the lagoon (calm, reef-protected section south of town)
Visit Kélonia – Réunion’s sea turtle rescue and research center
Explore the Stella Matutina Museum – a deep dive into Réunion’s sugar and slavery history
Paraglide from the cliffs above — one of the island’s top take-off zones
Eat at great local restaurants like Le Zat or Kivala
Catch live music or a sundowner near the seafront on weekends
Hike inland to Piton Saint-Leu or take scenic back roads through les Hauts
It’s compact enough to walk around but has enough food, accommodation, and activities to make it worth an overnight — or two if you want beach mornings and cultural afternoons.
👉 Local tip: The Friday evening market at the seafront is worth timing your visit for — think samoussas, fresh fruit, handmade crafts, and a full sunset.
