Maison De La Broderie

Directions

Maison de la Broderie is one of Cilaos’ most quietly impressive stops, where local craft meets living heritage. Housed in a century-old Creole building, the museum showcases the fine white embroidery that Cilaos is known for. Introduced by nuns in the early 20th century, this art form was passed down through generations and is still practiced today by the women of the village.

The museum walks you through the process, from raw thread to finished piece, with examples of traditional designs that reflect local nature and culture. You’ll often find embroiderers at work in the back room, stitching by hand in complete silence, except for the creak of the wooden floors. Pieces are for sale in the boutique, and each one is unique, made slowly and with care.

👉 If you're interested in learning the basics, ask about short workshops or demos. They’re occasionally offered on site for small groups.
