Just outside Cilaos town, the Forêt du Grand Matarum offers a peaceful break from the steep ridgelines and rocky trails of the cirque. This patch of humid highland forest is ideal for slower walks, shady picnics, and short nature loops without the need for full hiking gear. There are benches scattered under tamarins and cryptomerias, and the air smells faintly of pine and wet earth.

You’ll hear birds, catch glimpses of peaks through the canopy, and maybe even meet a local walking group or two. For kids or older travelers, it’s a gentle introduction to the wild side of Cilaos.
