Cirque de Salazie is the greenest, most accessible of Réunion’s three natural amphitheaters — a misty, waterfall-laced basin shaped by centuries of erosion and volcanic collapse. It’s just an hour inland from Saint-Denis and Saint-André, yet feels a world apart, with Creole houses, overgrown trails, and vertical green cliffs dripping with water.

Things to see and do:

  • Cascade Voile de la Mariée – iconic roadside waterfall (especially dramatic after rain)

  • Hell-Bourg – a pastel-colored Creole village ranked among the “most beautiful villages in France”

  • Maison Folio – historic home showing 19th-century Creole life

  • Short forest walks and long hikes to Bélouve, Trou de Fer, or Mafate

  • Creole restaurants and gîtes — simple, warm, and rooted in local tradition

Salazie is also your jumping-off point for trailheads to Cirque de Mafate (via Col des Bœufs or Bélouve), and for exploring less-visited îlets like Grand Îlet or Mare à Vieille Place.

👉 Local tip: Bring a jacket and expect cloud cover after 10 am — the weather changes fast, and it’s often misty even in the dry season.
