Pas de Bellecombe is the main access point to Piton de la Fournaise — and one of the most iconic viewpoints on the island. It sits at 2,311 meters above sea level and offers a wide, direct view over the Enclos Fouqué caldera. From here, you can see the smaller Formica Leo crater below, and on clear mornings, the Dolomieu summit beyond.

You don’t have to hike to enjoy it. There’s a viewing platform just steps from the car park, with railings and interpretation panels. Great for sunrise if you can handle the early, chilly start.

If you do want to go further, this is also the trailhead for the main volcano hike. You descend via a steep stairway into the caldera, cross the old lava flows, and approach the central crater. It’s a demanding, rocky trail — come prepared with layers, good shoes, and 2L of water per person minimum.

👉 Local tip: The weather flips fast. If it’s socked in with fog, wait 20 minutes — it often clears briefly. And bring a thermos. It’s cold up here, even in summer.
