Plaine des Sables is where La Réunion feels like another planet. After twisting your way up through forest and mist on the Route du Volcan, the landscape suddenly opens into a vast, flat, rust-red plain of ash and gravel, framed by old crater rims. It’s dry, silent, wind-blown, and looks like a Mars rover should be rolling across it.
You’ll pass a sign and viewpoint at the entrance — stop here first for a wide-angle photo. Then continue driving slowly across the plain. The road is fully paved but narrow and uneven. No shops, no signs, just you and this surreal high-altitude desert.
It’s not a hiking spot — it’s a drive-through geological experience, with a few safe pull-offs where you can get out, take photos, or just breathe in the dry air. Early morning is best for visibility and the fewest cars.
👉 Local tip: This is one of the coldest and driest places on the island. Bring a jacket and a full battery if you plan to take photos — and don’t fly your drone without checking local rules.
