Col de Fourche is more than a trail crossing. It’s one of the key high passes in the Cirque de Mafate, perched between Aurère and Grand Place, and offers some of the wildest panoramic views in this already isolated cirque. The pass itself is narrow and wind-swept, surrounded by towering ridgelines and deep ravines on either side. You’ll feel small in the best possible way.

To get there, you need to commit to a proper hike. The trail climbs steadily, often under hot sun, with switchbacks that gain elevation quickly. But when you reach the pass and look back toward the Cirque’s jagged horizon, it’s worth every step. It's also a crucial point on multi-day traverses, linking northern Mafate with its more central villages.

There’s no shelter, no facilities, and little signage. Just silence, wind, and space. It’s not one of the most popular trails, which makes it ideal for hikers looking to experience Mafate without the foot traffic found on the more accessible routes.
