Îlet des Orangers is one of the most tranquil and least-visited inhabited hamlets in Cirque de Mafate — ideal for hikers wanting to go beyond the well-trodden routes to Marla and La Nouvelle. Tucked into the western edge of the cirque, the îlet is known for its isolation, warm local hospitality, and views over the Rivière des Galets.
There are no roads. To get here, you’ll need to hike in via:
Canalisation des Orangers (from Sans-Souci, 4–5 hrs, fairly flat but exposed trail)
Aurère (if you're linking across Mafate on a longer loop)
La Possession (via 4x4 track to Deux-Bras, then on foot)
Once in Orangers:
Gîtes and table d’hôtes welcome hikers with homemade meals and a hot shower
Viewpoints and gardens offer calm, green rest
No shops, no signal, no noise — just the essentials
Perfect for overnight or linking into Cayenne or Roche Plate
👉 Local tip: If you come in via Canalisation, bring water and sun protection — the route is scenic but exposed especially midday.
