Directions

Roche Plate is one of the most isolated inhabited îlets in Réunion — a stunning plateau village tucked inside Cirque de Mafate, accessible only by foot or helicopter. This isn’t a stop you reach casually — it’s a destination for hikers who want to experience the raw, roadless heart of the island, with towering cliffs, dramatic trails, and a scattering of off-grid gîtes.

Popular access routes:

  • From Le Maïdo via the steep descent through La Brèche (5–6 hours, return is a serious climb)

  • From Trois-Bassins (Les Orangers) – quieter, more gradual approach (6–7 hours)

  • From Marla or La Nouvelle, if linking through Mafate over several days

In Roche Plate, you’ll find:

  • Basic gîtes and mountain food — cari poulet, lentils, rice, and rhum arrangé

  • Views over Rivière des Galets and into Mafate’s walls

  • Simple, authentic village life — solar power, no cars, just footpaths and hospitality

  • Night skies are worth the effort if you stay overnight

👉 Local tip: Book your gîte ahead (especially weekends), and carry cash — there's no mobile signal, no shops, and no ATMs.
