Les Orangers is not just a hike — it’s a step into another rhythm of life.

Tucked deep within the Cirque de Cilaos, this trail takes you across ridgelines, through dense highland forest, past waterfalls and ravines, and ultimately into a peaceful hamlet that feels untouched by time. No cars. No noise. Just stone paths, creole houses, and mountain silence.

The hike begins just outside Îlet à Cordes, already one of the most remote spots in the cirque. You’ll descend steeply, then climb again through fragrant forests and jaw-dropping panoramas that seem to shift with every bend in the path. If you're lucky, you may pass local porters carrying supplies by foot, as the village still relies on traditional means to receive goods.

At the end, Les Orangers welcomes you with its quiet charm. You can visit the tiny church, chat with residents (if they're around), and pause for a picnic overlooking the cliff faces and canyon below.

👉 Pro Tip: Bring plenty of water, sun protection, snacks, and ideally hiking poles — the terrain is rugged and there’s minimal shade as you climb out.
👉 Hidden Gem: If you spend time in the village, you may see old canal systems or encounter someone selling homemade jam or honey — all made with what's grown nearby.
