Cascade de Takamaka is a secluded waterfall nestled deep within the verdant Takamaka Valley, renowned for its dramatic landscapes and high rainfall. Accessing this natural wonder requires a demanding hike, but the reward is an intimate encounter with one of Réunion's hidden gems.

How to get there:

  • Starting Point: Begin at the Takamaka Belvedere parking area, located at the end of the D53 road from Saint-Benoît.

  • Trail Overview: The trail descends steeply into the valley, featuring sections with ladders and narrow paths. The terrain is often wet and slippery due to the area's high humidity.

  • Waterfall Access: After approximately 5 kilometers of challenging hiking, you'll reach the base of Cascade de Takamaka, where water cascades down steep cliffs into pristine pools below.

What to expect:

  • Diverse Flora and Fauna: The trail traverses a rich rainforest, home to endemic plant species and birdlife.

  • Hydroelectric Installations: The valley houses hydroelectric facilities harnessing the area's abundant water resources. Informational plaques along the trail provide insights into these operations.

  • Stunning Vistas: Throughout the hike, enjoy panoramic views of the valley's numerous waterfalls and rugged terrain.

👉 Local tip: Due to the trail's difficulty and the region's unpredictable weather, it's advisable to start early in the morning and inform someone of your hiking plans. Ensure you're equipped with appropriate gear, including sturdy footwear and rain protection.
